I was a devout believer in an active and involved god until the age of 22 or so. I saw many things that my co-believers were convinced were miraculous and undoubtedly strengthened their faith. I seem to recall that I always had an internal struggle with these evidences as I could rather easily see how there was always some explanation. I heard second hand stories of limbs growing back and such but I saw no evidence that was solid enough to convince me 100%. Since my religious apostasy I have witnessed numerous events that my family members are convinced were miraculous but I can easily see how their perceptions are influenced by their desire to believe.

As an example rather recently one of my family members had some suspected malignant lumps. On the scheduled day for a biopsy the lumps were no longer there. There was evidence that they had disappeared as an x-ray and exam showed them in place one day and they were completely gone a few weeks later. At the time the doctor explained that sometimes this happens and they weren't sure why. My religious family members appeared to have heard and understood that. A month or so later I was told how it was a miracle and they even misquoted the doctor saying that he couldn't explain it. I don't think they were being dishonest. I think they just remembered in a way that reinforced what they wanted to believe.

There is substantial evidence that people are self delusional with respect to memory and belief. Recognizing that, it is always amazing to me that with the clarifying unbiased toolchest of science that even intelligent people can choose the emotional satisfaction of false beliefs over evidenced ones.
